Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden says he is not paying attention to the fact that the Magpies currently sit seventh in the Premier League after nine games played.

Rafa Benitez’s side have taken their return to the top flight in their stride so far, and their 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace gave them their fourth league win of the season.

Two years ago, when Newcastle were relegated to the Championship, the Magpies were already in the drop zone after the same number of games, with just one win and six points, eight fewer than they do currently.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Hayden believes that taking games one at a time is reaping its rewards so far:

“I don’t really think the lads do look at the table, because it’s pointless at this stage of the season as there are so many games to go and points to play for. It means nothing. The most important thing we look at is each game. Three points were up for grabs (against Palace), and we took them. The next game’s another opportunity to get three points.”

Newcastle’s next match is against Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday night. Sean Dyche’s side have struggled at home so far this campaign, with just one win against Crystal Palace. It’s in stark contrast to their away form where they have picked up points against Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham.
