Newcastle are among the teams interested in veteran Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to El Pais (via the Shields Gazette).

The Magpies failed to land a signing for the goalkeeping position in the summer with other experienced stoppers such as Willy Caballero and Pepe Reina also believed to have been targeted by manager Rafa Benitez.

Casillas would be a surprise signing considering the 36 year old is plying his trade with Porto in the Champions League at the moment, but it seems the Portuguese side are keen to offload the Spaniard to cut their wage bill and keep within Financial Fair Play regulations.

The keeper has an incredible 167 caps for Spain, but he left La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2015 to make the switch to Porto. He did start the season as the club’s first choice keeper, but he has not featured in a match since the 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon at the beginning of the month, with Jose Sa taking his place in the starting eleven.
