Newcastle United are already ‘monitoring players’ ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

The Magpies had a quiet summer, with funds promised to Rafael Benitez by owner Mike Ashley proving not to be available, leading to the Spaniard’s frustration and criticism from the fans who had feared for their club’s top flight safety due to a lack of investment.

After a strong start to the new season however, those fears have since sunk, and with the news that the club are already assessing potential targets for after the New Year, the Toon Army will be sure to have a smile on their faces.

“Are we working for the January transfer window? Yes, we are already working on that,” Benitez said speaking with the Chronicle.

“Like the majority of the teams, we are monitoring players and that is the main thing.”

The Spaniard is thought to be interested in strengthening a number of positions, including up front and in central midfield.
