Loan star Mikel Merino believes Newcastle have both the right ‘heart’ and ‘mentality’ to have a successful season in the Premier League.

The Magpies have enjoyed a good start to the new campaign, having picked up 10 points from their opening 7 games to place them in 9th place.

Their most recent draw against Liverpool at home was perhaps their best performance of the season, and Merino believes if his side continue in a similar vein, they will reap the rewards.

“It was a tough game and everyone can see how good this team [Liverpool] is. I think we have done a great, great effort,” Merino said speaking of the his sides comeback against the Reds on Sunday.

“All the match we were running, it was incredible how we run and work, all the supporters were behind us, we achieved an important point against a great team.

“We are happy about that but we know we need to keep working and doing what we are doing.”

Merino, who is on a season long loan from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, has enjoyed a fine personal start to life in England, picking up the club’s most recent Player of the Month award for his impressive displays in the early etchings of the new campaign.

“This means that this team has heart, a really good mentality and it doesn’t matter if we’re one down or one up, we have to keep fighting,” Merino continued.

“We have believed about our possibilities – it doesn’t matter if we are losing by one, we keep fighting and in the end we have our important point, our goal and this is how this team works.

“We have to keep going like this though.”
