A Tyneside Foodbank has thanked Liverpool and Newcastle fans for what is described as an ‘amazing gesture’ following the Magpies draw with Jurgen Klopp’s side at the weekend.

The pair saw out a tense 1-1 affair on Sunday afternoon.

A Philippe Coutinho stunner opened the scoring for the visitors before Spaniard Joselu doubled his tally for the season to level the scores just before the break. While both sides had chances in the second period, neither could find the net.

However, it is, for once, not the football making the big headlines following the weekend’s clash, and is instead the fans who have stolen the limelight with their generosity.

Travelling fans made substantial donations to Newcastle West End foodbank bringing along at least two shopping trolleys worth of food and basic essentials, as well as numerous cash donations to the match at St James’ Park.

Michael Nixon, manager of the foodbank, says they collected more than half a ton of food altogether and over £1,500 in cash from supporters of both sides.

He said, speaking in the Liverpool Echo: “Fans from Liverpool brought two shopping trolleys worth of items, including tinned food, long life milk and other basic essentials.

“It was absolutely wonderful of them – an amazing gesture.”

Nixon also thanked the Newcastle fans for their donations, and hopes more of the same can be done going forward.

“Newcastle supporters were also very generous and I just think that all the fans, from both sides, have been superb and are excellent ambassadors of the game.

“On the day, their spirit was amazing and they couldn’t have been more helpful.”
