The BBC last night fell foul of a subtitling error which saw Newcastle United labelled as ‘black and white scum’ during the highlights of their game versus Liverpool on Sunday.

The error, seen on Match of the Day 2, came as commentator Guy Mowbray was discussing Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge’s record against the Magpies.

Mowbray can be heard saying: “Sturridge has scored in all four of his previous Premier League starts at Newcastle. For the Reds against the team in black and white, he boasts five goals in five appearances.”

However the BBC’s ability to translate Mowbray’s speech into subtitles was obviously not quite as impressive as Sturridge’s scoring record on Tyneside.

Instead of ‘Newcastle’, the subtitles read ‘black and white scum’, a derogatory term often used by the Magpies north-east rivals to describe them.

The BBC have since apologised for what was an ‘honest mistake’.

A BBC spokesperson said: “Our live subtitling service is normally very accurate and makes our content much more accessible, but there are times when unfortunate errors occur. On this occasion the error was spotted and corrected immediately.”
