Newcastle United fans have been given the chance to own a piece of the club’s history after two original turnstiles from St James’ Park are set to go up for auction.

The turnstiles – believed to be over 100 years old and weighing half a tonne each – will go under the hammer tomorrow at Jarrow Auctions.

Brian Cairns, 55, owner of the auction house, said: “The guy that brought these in bought them from a sale in Newcastle back in 2006 where quite a lot of material related to the club was up for grabs.

“He’s been storing them in his barn ever since and is looking to move them on because he’s relocating.

“They’re in brilliant condition considering their age, largely because they’ve been kept safely inside for all those years.”

Starting price for the two items start at £800 a piece, however that could prove to be a bargain price for a Magpies fan looking to get their hands permanently on an important piece of the club’s history.

“They’re really unique items, I’ve been looking all over for things like this for years but there isn’t much around so we expect some demand.” McCairns said.

“I have never seen ones like this, they’re incredibly rare slices of Newcastle United history and were part of that stadium for many years.
