Newcastle’s attempts to trim down their first team squad have been dealt a blow by PEC Zwolle rejecting a loan deal for Curtis Good.

According to a report in The Chronicle a trial period came to an abrupt halt with the defender returning to St James’ Park.

Good has been told that his Newcastle career is over but with a year left on his contract he could be left to spend another season on the pay roll without making any contribution. Last season his only top team appearance was in the FA Cup defeat from Oxford United.

As well as trying to bring in the quality needed to face the challenge of the Premier League Rafa Benitez is trying to get half a dozen players out the door.

With lucrative contracts it is becoming increasingly difficult to move players on with Notts County rejecting the chance to sign Good earlier in the summer.
