Strength in depth (kind of…)

No one would doubt Newcastle’s need for more summer signings, though one area of the squad looked rather strong today.

Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba – the first choice central defensive partnership until recently – were brought on after injuries and performed well in the absence of both Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett.

Again, boasting such options in those berths isn’t something Newcastle United have been known for of late. Obviously, recruitment work needs to be done, though having four solid centre-backs available is certainly promising.
