In an ideal world Rafa Benitez would be able to get rid of half a dozen players from the payroll.
The legacy of past managers has come back to bite the Newcastle boss as he tries to push some players out the door to make way for those that he wants to see in the Premier League.
Trying to convince another club that your own flop is actually worth buying is one of the toughest tasks in the game with Newcastle fans having plenty of experience of the scenario.
Unbelievable that we can’t even give players away on a free #NUFC

The amount of shit and dead wood we have at this club is inconceivable!! How has it been aloud to happen. Can never happen again #nufc

Honestly would you leave Newcastle to be on less wages? #nochance #nufc

#NUFC is going to have to take a hit to get them off the payroll. They aren’t suddenly going to become good players.

Wonder if we can can terminate contract? Obviously Haidara could fetch a respectable fee. He’s not a bad player… #nufc https://t.co/NYwhiEO3ZC

One saving grace this year is that a lot of those players are in the final year of their contract and know that any move now is better for their future career than a season spent in the background at St James’ Park forgotten by all except the payroll operator.
When Benitez spoke out recently about the crazy transfer market there were two sides to the story- as well as the transfer fees there are the bloated contracts that many players are sitting on with no prospect- or desire- of seeing first team action.
Moving them on is proving as difficult as bringing players in for the start of the Premier League campaign.
