Newcastle could miss out on Andreas Samaris because Rafa Benitez can’t offload the flops that he inherited as manager.

According to a report in The Mirror a deal for the Benfica midfielder can’t be sanctioned until players like Massadio Haidara and Emmanuel Riviere are moved on.

Deals for Haidara and Riviere have fallen through in recent days with the buying clubs aware of how keen Newcastle are to move the duo on.

So far in this window Benitez has spent £31m on players with the deal for Samaris edging that figure towards the £50m mark.

The Greek internationalist has been earmarked to play as a holding midfielder but with a striker as his signing priority Newcastle want to bring in some money before releasing the funds for Samaris.

With less than a fortnight to go there are still major areas of the team needing strengthened but it appears that some of the deadwood will need to move on before Benitez can bring in the quality he requires for Newcastle’s Premier League bid.
