Newcastle United will have to come up with £14m to sign Fabian Delph.

According to a report in The Sun Manchester City have turned down a £10m bid from Stoke City and are holding out for £14m.

Delph dropped almost completely out of contention for a place at the Etihad last season with his prospects further reduced by Pep Guardiola’s summer spending spree.

Newcastle were linked with a move for the former Aston Villa man during the January transfer window at the same time as they linked with Tom Cairney, Tom Ince and James McCarthy.

Rafa Benitez has still to make any additions to his midfield since the transfer window opened with tried and tested Premier League players thin on the ground.

Although Delph’s transfer fee seems below average he is on a lucrative contract with City until 2020 and will almost certainly look for those terms to be matched if he agrees to a transfer.
