Adam Armstrong accepts the extra pressure of being a local lad at Newcastle United.

In an interview with The Chronicle the young striker knows that the benchmark for local strikers will always be Alan Shearer.

After scoring six times on loan at Barnsley last season he knows that he’ll need to up his strike rate with Bolton Wanderers likely to be his next destination.

Growing up at Newcastle you know Alan Shearer is there as a legend everyone looks up to, so there is extra attention for a local lad,” he said. “I’ve learned to live with it.”

Two seasons ago Armstrong scored 20 League One goals for Coventry City with that sort of return required to kick down the first team door at Newcastle next summer

Last season Tammy Abraham showed what is possible for a loan striker with a 26 goal haul at Bristol City, a total that attracted an offer from Newcastle before the striker and Chelsea decided on moving to Swansea.

While Shearer walked straight into the Newcastle side as a record signing for £15m in 1996 Armstrong faces a much tougher task with Bolton the next step after stopping off at Coventry, Barnsley and likely Bolton.
