Newcastle face competition from Southampton to sign Calum Chambers.
According to a report in the Daily Star the Arsenal defender could be on his way back to St Mary’s as Southampton prepare for further raids on their squad.
Chambers was identified early by Rafa Benitez as having the pedigree needed to thrive in the Premier League with informal approaches made about the 22-year-old.
Southampton picked up £16m for selling Chambers to Arsenal in 2014 but after just 20 Premier League appearances he was sent on loan to Middlesbrough last season.
Arsenal are believed to be looking to recoup the money they spent on Chambers with Arsene Wenger looking to trim down the size of his squad.
Despite lots of interest and enquiries in the transfer market Rafa Benitez has struggled to nail down deals and risks losing out on Chambers who could be tempted back to Southampton to pick up his career.
