Newcastle could revive a move for Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney this summer, according to the Chronicle.

Rafa Benitez was reportedly interested in making a bid for the 26 year old in the January transfer window but the Cottagers set a £20million asking price for the playmaker.

Fulham lost out on promotion to the Premier League when they lost 1-0 to Reading in the second leg of the Championship playoff semi-final last night, and Cairney may be considering a transfer to achieve his ambition of playing top flight football.

The midfielder has been one of the Championship’s stand out performers this season, having made the league’s PFA team of the year after scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 47 games.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has already stated after the club’s playoff loss that he wants to keep his best players for a promotion push next season, and it is likely Newcastle will have a fight on their hands if they want to land Cairney before the start of next season.
