Wolves are looking to sign Newcastle centre back Grant Hanley, but only if manager Paul Lambert remains at the club, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The former Aston Villa and Norwich boss is said to be in the middle of a power struggle with super agent Jorge Mendes who has been responsible for most of the club’s player recruitment up until now.

Mendes has close contacts with the Chinese owners of Wolves and was responsible for the signings of Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro and Silvio, but the fact the club has finished 15th in the table despite significant transfer outlays means Lambert wants to take greater control over transfers.

Lambert is said to want Hanley as part of a group of British players he wants to build a team around. The Scottish manager could however resign if Wolves’ owner the Fosun group don’t side with him against Mendes over recruitment.

Since joining from Blackburn Rovers for £5.5m, Hanley has made just 16 appearances, and with Chancel Mbemba’s late season run in the first team, it seems clear the 25 year old is the club’s fourth choice centre half, which could leave him vulnerable if manager Rafa Benitez is seeking to strengthen that position for next season.
