Newcastle sent scouts to watch Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney as the Cottagers’ beat Huddersfield Town 4-1 at the weekend, according to the Mirror.

Representatives for the Magpies at the John Smiths’ stadium would have been impressed by what they saw with the 26 year old captaining and scoring in a comprehensive victory over the Terriers.

The result coincidentally leaves Newcastle on the verge of promotion back to the Premier League and it seems likely, the Mirror reports, that manager Rafa Benitez will make a move for the midfielder once a top two finish has been secured.

Cairney was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, and is well deserving of his place within the eleven. In 47 appearances in all competitions this season, the Fulham captain has scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists.

The midfielder is rated at £10m but the Magpies may have competition for his signature with Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Burnley also having sent scouts to watch Cairney in recent weeks.
