Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez thinks the absence of centre back Ciaran Clark has unbalanced the Magpies’ defence in recent games.

The 27 year old is left footed, and talking to the Shields Gazette, Benitez believes he provides the team with more security whilst in possession of the ball. Deputies Grant Hanley and Chancel Mbemba are both right footed and he feels this has affected the balance:

“It’s something you have to manage. Clark was one of the best defenders when he got injured. (Grant) Hanley and Chancel (Mbemba) are trying to fill the gap, but the difference between them is Clark is left-footed. To have him playing on this side gives you better possession of the ball, especially when you’re playing at home.”

Whether Clark is available to play tonight against Leeds it remains to be seen. Benitez described the defender as being “close” to a return to full fitness from a knee injury.

With Clark and captain Jamaal Lascelles forming a formidable centre back partnership this season, the Magpies have the joint best defence in the Championship alongside current league leaders Brighton. Clark’s absence was keenly felt in the 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, and Newcastle fans will be hoping for his swift return for the run in.
