Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow says that although the Magpies are gunning for the Championship title, they would be content to come second and still get promotion to the Premier League.

Darlow’s side are currently one point ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion at the top of the Championship table with eight games to go, and will be hoping to gain a further three points in their promotion charge when they face Wigan Athletic at the weekend. When asked about whether Newcastle are aiming to remain at the top, Darlow told the Chronicle:

“Definitely – as a squad, everyone wants to win the league. We’d take second if it came down to it I suppose, but we know the goal is to be promoted and everybody wants to win the league. We have to see how it goes.”

The home match against Wigan on Saturday is followed by another game at St James’ Park against Burton Albion; both games the Magpies are expected to win relatively comfortably.

One concern heading into the match however will be who Rafa Benitez will have available to play in the Newcastle backline. With Grant Hanley, DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clark all expected to miss the weekend match, Vurnon Anita and Chancel Mbemba could be in line for starts.
