Newcastle United are considering keeping utility player Vurnon Anita for next season, according to the Northern Echo.

The Dutchman’s current deal expires in the summer and it was expected that the 27 year old would be allowed to leave St James’ Park due to his wage demands.

Anita is on Premier League wages, and it was reported that the Magpies were reluctant to offer a new contract based on the same salary. It seems however that there has been a change of heart.

The player was signed from Ajax in 2012 for £6.7million as a midfielder but he has been a regular at right back this campaign under Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard is a big fan of Anita’s work rate, tactical awareness and adaptability, and it seems that the Magpies could now offer the player a new deal with promotion to the Premier League a distinct possibility.

The Dutch international is looking for a “modest” increase on his current wages, the Northern Echo reports, and it seems likely a decision will be made on the player’s future close to the end of the season when everyone has a better idea what division the Magpies will be playing in.
