Newcastle winger Yoan Gouffran is backing the Magpies to come through an intense fixture list over the next month and win the Championship title.
Speaking to the club’s official website (via the Chronicle), the Frenchman believes that the team will need to improve on the 3-1 home defeat to Fulham they suffered last weekend:
“We have to improve and we have to play hard to win every week. It’s a fight. We have to play seven in April and it will be hard but we have to win games as many games as possible to stay on top of the table. And why not win the title, and get promoted?”
Despite seeming to be on the way out of St James’ Park last summer, Gouffran worked his way back into manager Rafa Benitez’s plan this season, racking up 38 appearances in total so far.
His reintegration into the first team has even led to talk that the Magpies are considering giving the 30 year old a contract extension. The winger’s current deal expires in the summer and it was anticipated that he would return to France. His future may depend on Newcastle’s promotion to the Premier League with the Frenchman’s wage demands proving the main hurdle to any deal being signed.
