So, with just hours left of Rafa Benitez’s first January transfer window in charge of Newcastle United, links with Andros Townsend are increasing by the minute.

While the saga drags on, Times journalist George Caulkin has hinted the Toon Army could welcome ANOTHER midfielder today, though perhaps it won’t be as exciting. He’s suggested the Magpies could recall someone currently on loan, having already done so with Sammy Ameobi this term.

An injury crisis on Tyneside saw Benitez recall the 24-year-old, though no names are mentioned by Caulkin in regards to who to follow. The likes of Henri Saivet and Siem De Jong are currently midfielders out on loan, at St. Etienne and PSV Eindhoven respectively, though neither particularly convinced during their stints in black and white prior to leaving.

Still, perhaps De Jong would help provide an added source of creativity to the ranks, with Newcastle struggling to create without Jonjo Shelvey.
