Newcastle United are weighing up a sensational move to bring Andros Townsend back to St. James’ Park, according to the Daily Mail.

The England international left the Magpies after less than six months in black and white, as he linked up with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace.

However, the 25-year-old has struggled to wholly convince in south London, despite being called into the Three Lions’ most recent squads.

With that in mind, the report suggests current Toon chief Rafa Benitez is eager to sign players of Premier League quality as he attempts to restore the Tyneside titans to the English elite. Wide areas, in particular, are a problem for the Spaniard right now with only Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran currently available for selection.

It’s fair to say Townsend was a popular player during his short stint in the North East upon joining from Tottenham Hotspur after a series of big performances during their relegation battle. In fact, his stunning free-kick against Palace back in April was one of their goals of the season.

Still, it’s unclear just how his potential return to Newcastle United would go down after leaving to join a side not fairing much better so soon after joining.
