According to Turkish outlet FotomacSuper Lig side Besiktas are weighing up a potential move for Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The 22-year-old is reportedly being eyed by top brass in Istanbul as a potential arrival to help bolster their attack as they attempt to close the gap on city rivals Başakşehir at the summit of the Super Lig. For their part, the latterly mentioned team were recently linked with a move for Chrisitan Atsu.

Indeed, the Black Eagles are understood to have tentatively cast keen eyes over Mitrovic’s situation on Tyneside as he struggles to step out Championship top scorer Dwight Gayle’s shadow. Despite the 22-year-old’s standing as one of the most popular players at St. James’ Park, he has struggled to command much of a starting berth under Rafa Benitez in the second tier.

In fact, it’s not even the first time he has been linked with an exit, with moves to the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Napoli all previously mooted over the past few months.

Weirdly enough, they claim that manager Senol Gunes needs to properly run the rule over the former Anderlecht ace before deciding to formally make a move, so perhaps these reports should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Outside of he and Gayle, only summer signing Daryl Murphy is a recognised centre-forward available to Benitez at St. James’ Park.
