Aleksandar Mitrovic’s season took a cruel today against Birmingham City in the FA Cup as the Serbian was stretchered off at St. Andrew’s.
Handed a rare starting berth by Rafa Benitez for the clash with the Blues in the 3rd round, the Serbian was paired with summer signing Daryl Murphy as the Spaniard opted to deploy two central strikers.
However, before the 22-year-old could stake a claim, injury cruelly struck him down and he was carried off after being given oxygen.
It seems as if he was injured in the melee that led to Murphy’s goal, with no one knowing exactly what happened just yet, but it looks like an awful fall in the scramble.
In all honesty, the injury looks a horribly season one and it would be a surprise to see Mitrovic playing again this season, creating a further headache for Benitez in his attempts to win the Championship.
Such is his hugely popular standing amongst the club’s fans, the Toon Army took to Twitter to wish him well.
Hope Mitrovic is better soon … #NUFC

Gutted for Mitrovic – it's usually his marker that needs the oxygen mask. Let's hope is just a scare. #NUFC #Mitro
