The FA Cup certainly hasn’t been very kind to Newcastle United over the past few years and Saturday afternoon proved no different as Birmingham City held out for a frustrating draw.
In truth, the Magpies really didn’t another game in already congested winter period for Championship clubs, though at least remain in the competition when they’d usually have crashed out.
Progress, at least.
Though the Blues are likely to provide a much sterner test upon their visit to St. James’ Park than they did in the league back as the Magpies ran riot in a 4-0 win, those on Tyneside will feel it’s a winnable tie.
Which is exactly why the news that the winners of their game will play League One side Oxford United has served up some social media delight.
The notion of playing the Us in the next round is hugely exciting and the Toon would surely go in as strong favourites, potentially setting up a very welcome cup run under Rafa Benitez.
Clearly, there’s still a lot to play for, though here’s how Newcastle United fans reacted on Twitter to drawing Oxford in the FA Cup.
Let's get last Brum and then down too Oxford, there's better draws and there's a lot worse too #nufc

Oxford is a nice draw, but need to beat Birmingham first. The return of Jonjo Shelvey makes that more likely than it was on Saturday. #nufc

Oxford's ground there situated next to a Science Park. Pardew wouldn't have liked that #nufc
