It’s fair to say life at St. James’ Park hasn’t been entirely enjoyable for summer signing Matz Sels as yet within the goal frame for Newcastle United.

Rafa Benitez’s first signing for the Toon Army, the 24-year-old goalkeeper has struggled to wholly convince for the Magpies and hasn’t appeared in the Championship since his mistake allowed Aston Villa a late equaliser back in September. In fact, when the Belgian was handed a starting berth against Hull City in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup, he was culpable for their quick-fire leveller, though blaming him entirely for that particular result seems somewhat harsh.

His relationship with the Tyneside faithful then took a sour turn after he was forced to delete his Twitter account following the abuse after the Villa draw, though there have been some promising quotes from him as quoted in the Shields Gazette.

“I try to work hard in training and show myself and make it difficult (for him to decide)” he said.

”That’s what I try to do. It’s football. Karl’s doing well at the moment. As a goalkeeper, there’s only one position, so it’s normal. I have to be patient and see what the future brings.”

Karl Darlow and the returning Rob Elliot are also available to Rafa Benitez between the posts, though it’s promising to see Sels focusing after a difficult first few months with Newcastle.
