Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney could make a return to former club Northampton Town on loan, according to the Chronicle

Signed from the Cobblers last year, the 20-year-old has since been farmed out on loan to the likes of Barnsley and Shrewsbury Town, after making just two appearances for the Magpies’ first-team.

As promising a talent as he is, the likes of Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy are all ahead of him in the pecking order in central striking position under Rafa Benitez right now.

With that in mind, the League One side are reportedly hoping to bring their academy graduate back to Sixfields this month in an effort to bolster their frontline.

It’s understood the Toon Army could be willing to entertain a deal this month, having also allowed Adam Armstrong to continue his development on loan at Championship rivals Barnsley.

Do you think Toney could one day break the first-team? Let us know below…
