Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was delighted to have made his England Under 21 debut in the international break.

The 19 year old started the 1-0 win against Kazakhstan last Thursday, keeping a clean sheet on his first start, and he told NUFC TV that he was happy with how his debut went:

“It was a great moment for me to play that game against Kazakhstan. I felt I did well in training in the week building up; the manager put me in and I was delighted. I didn’t have a lot to do in the game but it was a nice moment for me.”

Woodman remained at Newcastle in the summer rather than being sent out on loan by manager Rafa Benitez, and will have a big task on his hands if he wants to break through to the first team at St James’ Park.

Karl Darlow currently holds the number one jersey after being given starts against Norwich City and Rotherham by Rafa Benitez in the last two league games. Summer signing Matz Sels meanwhile started the season as the club’s first choice keeper, and Republic of Ireland international Rob Elliot is just a few weeks away from full fitness after recovering from a long term knee injury.
