Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic says he is frustrated that he is currently backup that forward Dwight Gayle but he understands that as the £10.5million is banging in the goals, he can’t expect to start every week at the moment.

The Serbian scored a brace in the 6-0 rout over Preston in the EFL Cup on Tuesday but has only started one league match so far this campaign against QPR in another 6-0 victory. Talking to the Chronicle, the 22 year old says he is waiting for his chance to come back into the team and be a first team regular again:

“It’s not been easy for me as a striker because you have Dwight Gayle who is scoring every game. I say I love Dwight, I like him a lot as a person and as a player. I will keep going and that’s all I keep saying.”

“I am working hard. If you are a good player you have to push yourself until you get your chance. I am doing that. I hope that when I get my next chance I will score and do well again.”

Mitrovic’s popularity at St James’ Park is not in question and the Serbian was delighted to hear his name being sung around the ground during the match. With Rafa Benitez opting only to play one up front in order to have more numbers in midfield however, he will need to bide his time and wait until when Gayle’s game goes slightly off the boil.
