Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle is excited by the potential partnership between himself and fellow striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian missed the opening four matches of the season and the players have yet to play in a competitive match in the same side.

Gayle came on a substitute in the EFL Cup against Cheltenham Town for Mitrovic but both player suffered head injuries and concussion during the game, missing the match against Brighton & Hove Albion in the process. They both returned for the match against Derby but Mitrovic was benched for the match while Gayle started. The opposite occurred against QPR on Tuesday night. Gayle feels however if given the change, the pair would work well together. He told the Evening Chronicle

“He’s a great striker, a great hold-up player. Me and him could work really well together. My runs off of his flick-ons would work well. But we’ve got some great different strikers here, and all different combinations would work well.”

In addition to Gayle and Mitrovic, the Magpies have Ayoze Perez and Daryl Murphy at their disposal. While Perez started and scored against QPR in Newcastle’s last match, new £3m signing from Ipswich Murphy could not even make the bench. We will have to see whether Rafa Benitez’s rotation will allow for the Irish international to make his debut against Wolves tomorrow.
