Former Newcastle left back Olivier Bernard has backed DeAndre Yedlin to be a success at Newcastle after making his £5million move from Tottenham Hotspur before the end of the transfer window.

The Magpies were in need of cover at right back after allowing Daryl Janmaat to leave for Watford in a £7million deal, and writing in his column for the Evening Chronicle, Bernard believes that Yedlin will prove an astute signing by manager Rafa Benitez:

“One player who some fans appear unsure about but who I really like is DeAndre Yedlin. He still has plenty to work on from a defensive point of view, but he is someone who is comfortable on the ball and has bags of pace.”

Bernard sees the American international as a player with potential and he sees Benitez as being the ideal manager to help the 23 year old improve the defensive side of his game:

“He already has plenty of caps for the United States, he is gathering experience with every passing month and if there’s one manager who can improve him as a player defensively then it’s Rafa Benitez.”

Newcastle face Derby County on Saturday evening and it will be interesting to see which player Rafa will start at full back with Vurnon Anita, Yedlin and Spanish full back Jesus Gamez all vying for the same spot in the side. There is a certainly competition for places at St James’ Park this season.
