Marseille are interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Henri Saivet, according to La Provence. The French newspaper believe that the Ligue One side have contacted the 25 year old’s agent about a possible move.
The Frenchman does not figure in manager Rafa Benitez’s plans for the new season after only featuring four times last campaign despite only being signed for a reported £5million in January from Bordeaux.
At this stage, it is not certain whether Marseille will formally make an offer for Saivet, La Provence reports, as their priority is Norwich City midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu. The French side are believed to be close to signing another Newcastle player with winger Florian Thauvin expected to rejoin the club on loan for a second time. It is being reported however that Marseille will have to agree to a purchase option in the loan agreement which requires them to buy the player for £9million at the end of the season.
