Marseille are hoping to secure the signing of Newcastle midfielder Henri Saivet before their first league game on Sunday, according to the French newspaper La Provence.
The 25 year old only signed from Bordeaux for £5million back in January but has failed to make an impact in the first team for the Magpies during his short stay. The Senegalese international has not been involved in manager Rafa Benitez’s preseason plans and was not included in Newcastle’s squad for the 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Friday night.
Marseille face Toulouse in Ligue One at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening and the French club’s sporting director Gunter Jacob is said to be locked in negotiations with Newcastle regarding a potential transfer for Saivet. The midfielder has made just four appearances since arriving six months ago and it looks like he has now played his last game for Newcastle with Benitez favouring other players in the middle of the park.
