Bafetimbi GomisThere is no doubt that Newcastle United will go back in for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis in the January transfer window, but it looks like they will face serious competition from Serie A club Roma, who have been boosted by the cash received from Tottenham Hotspur for Erik Lamela.

If there was talk from Alan Pardew in the week that a bid for a marquee signing would have taken Newcastle into their overdraft, the same couldn’t be said for a move for Gomis in January.

At that time the French striker will have just six months left on his contract and should be available for less than £5million, which will be sure to mean that there are a lot more clubs interested in him.

One of those clubs will be Roma, who showed interest in the striker in the summer, and like Newcastle will return for the player next year.

Roma Sporting Director Walter Sabatini is thought to be a big fan of Gomis and will be confident of securing the Frenchman under the nose of Joe Kinnear

The Italian club will have a fair amount of cash in the kitty as well, having brought in over £90m in the summer, with Premier League club Tottenham contributing £30m of that.

Add in over £30m from PSG for Marquinhos and £12m from Southampton for Osvaldo and Roma aren’t short of a bit of cash, so £5m won’t represent a problem for them.

So, big-spending Spurs could well end up hindering Newcastle’s chances of landing Gomis!
