Jelle VossenYesterday we brought you a picture that showed Newcastle United Director of Football Joe Kinnear on his way to the continent and now rumours are circulating that he was off to Belgiau to strike up a deal with Genk for Belgian striker Jelle Vossen.

With Newcastle pulling out of a deal to sign Bafetimbi Gomis today, attention would have turned to other striking possibilities, of which Vossen appears to be one.

24 years of age, Vossen has spent the whole of his senior career at Genk, apart from a short loan spell with Cercle Brugge, and has scored over 75 goals at a strike rate of better than one in two in the Belgian Pro League.

Vossen has represented Belgium all through the youth levels, from U15 to U21, and has won 11 caps for the Belgian senior side, scoring twice in Euro 2012 qualifying in home matches against Austria and Azerbaijan.

Newcastle are rumoured to be making an £8.5 million bid for the 5ft 11in striker, which seems a little steep for someone who has proved little outside of Belgian football, a country that isn’t known for the strength of its domestic league.

However, 14 league goals in 21 appearances last season is a very impressive record, and Vossen netted 24 and 27 goals respectively in the two campaigns prior to that.

What do you reckon? Would you take Jelle Vossen at Newcastle? Have a look at the Belgian in action in the video below to help make up your mind…

Just Want Mr Ashley To Back Pards And Spend Some Real Money And Make Toon Title Contenders Again We Should Go For McCarthy And McManaman Of Wigan And Sell Obertan Anita Gosling Shola. If Cabaye Wants To Go Let Him Go For At Least £35 Million And Bring In A World Class Striker Like Pato Dzeko :+)

  • paul Regret says:

    He is no Alan Shearer

  • Joe says:

He sounds pretty good from what I’ve heard and at that age he seems a bit of a hidden gem. Get him in!

  • lovell says:

  • boljon says:

What is the source of the rumour?

  • Waheed A says:

He’s a class and another Michu in d making.but has to be powerful to be in the premier league.Shola should not go as his experience wll help Jelle. We equally need a quality right back and central midfielder (Macarthy of wigan).

  • jageordie pelpa says:

We need a gud holding midfielder

  • Toonfan says:

Looks good, but I wouldnt pay 8.5 mil for him, we were getting Gomis for 8 mil. Maybe a 7 mil deal sounds better.

  • Ollie says:

The lad can finish but from what I’ve seen may be a little slow. I hope I am wrong but either way worth a punt based on lovels post

  • Nut says:

Doesn’t really matter what level he’s playing at, if he’s in top level of Flemish league with that kind of record he should be a decent signing, good strikers seem to be able to put them away at any level anyway.

No telling what he will be like until we get him in.

Gomis would have been a good signing but seems to me they keep moving the goals and having sold Lopez they now want to play games with Gomis again in order to try and wrangle more money from us once more.

The agent proved with the Kevin Gamero and the Melvut Erdink transfers he can’t be trusted anyway if he doesn’t get the backhanders he expects he pushes them to someone else who will pay them.

He is not a licenced agent he is a rogue agent.

The director of the club is equally shrewed and thinks he can play a fiddle and we will dance.

We will get someone but I don’t want to see us pay over the odds, if we break our system and do that then the next club and the next will think they can do the same.

We have a good side probably better than most in the prem outside the top 5 and with some luck we can finish up there or there abouts.

    • Seb Bailey says:

Watch on Monday and make your comments if how good we are

We are starting level pegging in 4 weeks we will be bottom 3 and will struggle to get out if the relegation zone by January

It all depends how far we are behind the bottom 10 pack to see if we survive

This is Premiership football & there are not many teams worse than Newcastle

      • Allyt1979 says:

Completely disagree. We have far fewer games than last season (noneurope) plus we strengthened in January more than any other club. They have now learnt English and settled. Remy in for BA. If we can keep relatively injury free I think top 10. A new quality striker to add deprh and I will say top 8.

        • Seb Bailey says:

Ally you are just the type of fan Ashlry wants Fickle and Blind

This team will be no where near 10th and will struggle to get out the bottom 3 before January. Wake up man

          • Korn says:

Seb: really? Wake up man! Cabaye, Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Colo, Remy, Cisse, Debuchy, Santon, Krul……… Struggle? Relegation?

            Bul*sh*t…….

          • Darren says:

How is Ally being fickle? Having some confidence in your club and players and supporting them is anything but fickle.

Anyway Nut is right in that we do have a very good quality set of players, much better than many clubs in this league. Its the manager that’s the problem though and unfortunately he’s capable of holding us back so much that we may not even make top 10. But I really can’t see relegation scraps again, too much quality even for Pardew to mess up to that degree IMO.

        • Seb Bailey says:

Kom you think just like Pardew come on here after the first 4 games

We are 3 players short & possibly when we get stuffed by Ceitey and loose 2 home games they grab someone problem is it will be anyone

      • David Dutch says:

You must be a miserable *** Bailey hate to be your mate I bet you have lost a pound and found a penny in that half empty glass of yours.

If we are not in the bottom 3 in 4 weeks and struggle until January how many times will you come on here and say’soory I was wrong’ Let me think hey I do not need any fingers to count how many times.

        • Seb Bailey says:

Watch and learn you fool You may be taken for an idiot but most fans are realistic and see the inadequate squad we have. Fool

        • Seb Bailey says:

David Dutch you can never be my m8
You would be crying all the time

Watch what these oafs are doing to your club then get some sleep & wake up

  • TickTock says:

Seb Bailey,Sunderland are worse than Newcastle,MACKEM

    • Seb Bailey says:

      We will soon see m8

    • Seb Bailey says:

Clock man. Sunderland know they are bad but we think we are good and can cope. Heard that this time last season

Get real man we are trying to survive before a ball is even kicked. Good planning or what

  • Sharpy17 says:

I agree with Nut. Christian Benteke scored 19 in 37 at Gent, for Villa 19 in 34.
£8.5m for a 24yr old Belgian international seems fair to me when we were going to pay that for Gomis. Vossen will likely demand alot less wages wise as well I’d reckon.
Bring him in, then get Scott Sinclair and lets push for 6-7th.

    • Sharpy17 says:

*Gent should read Genk* and the point I was making is that Vossen has scored over 20 goals per season for the last 3 seasons. If our players get the ball into the box for him I’m sure he will do the rest.

  • Duflet says:

I’m not one to use the Dennis Wise method of scouting but this kid looks sharp.
Not afraid to ‘have a dig’ seems to catch the keeper off guard and his accuracy looks top notch.
The only problem I can see, as with nearly every season, is service.
He has good balls fed in to him on numerous occasions and puts them away, I fear he will not get that at Newcastle just hoping our midfield gel a bit better this season and this guy could be lethal up top with Cisse.

  • Brian says:

Sadly the village idiot will now be in panic mode as time runs out. Just wonder if this guy was scouted and recommended by Carr . Or is the best director in football relying on utube

  • MallorcaMag says:

Following on from Inter taking Chelsea’s young Brazilian , Wallace , on loan.
The Toon are taking a young Argentinian on loan from Carlisle – he’s called
    Gromit.
