This week the Daily Mail released stats from the Premier League about which players sell the most football shirts at each top flight club, and as far as Newcastle United are concerned, there aren’t many surprises which names the Toon Army want on their back.

Graham Carr has been at the heart of a very successful recruitment policy in the last couple of years and this is reflected in the Newcastle United shirts that fans have been buying in recent months.

The top three Newcastle players that sell the most shirts are French duo Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye, and Senegal striker Papiss Cisse – all players who have been signed over the last two years (permanently as opposed to a loan deal in Ben Arfa’s case).

Newcastle’s number 10 Hatem Ben Arfa is arguably the most exciting Magpie to watch and keeps you on the edge of your seat with his trickery that harks back to the days of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers.

Compatriot Yohan Cabaye has been a revelation on Tyneside, running the show in the middle of the park for Newcastle, and his goal against Liverpool at Anfield last weekend showed just how much quality he has.

While Papiss Cisse might have struggled in this campaign, last season he was scoring goals for fun and Newcastle fans would have flocked to get his name on the back of their shirt following stunning strikes like the ones against Chelsea.

One player I’m surprised that isn’t in the top three is Shola Ameobi, as the Mackem Slayer is a cult hero in the north east, while Demba Ba would be a cheap name to get on your back as you’d only have to fork out for two letters, but I guess rumours of his departure might put you off.

Are you at all surprised about which three players sell the most Newcastle United shirts?
