Wigan Athletic did Newcastle a massive favour today as Roberto Martinez’s men came away from Anfield with all three points as they beat Liverpool 2-1.
It was a Newcastle old boy who did the damage to Kenny Dalglish’s men as well, with former Magpie defender Gary Caldwell scoring the winning goal.
This is a great result for Newcastle, as Liverpool’s defeat leaves them five points behind Alan Pardew’s men in the Premier League table in seventh place, having played an extra game.

Depending what happens against West Brom, Newcastle could be eight points ahead of Liverpool when the Reds travel to St James’ Park next Sunday.
The result at Stamford Bridge also went in Newcastle’s favour, as Chelsea and Tottenham played out a goalless draw, leaving the Blues just three points ahead of the Magpies in 5th place.
At Anfield Wigan were good value for their victory, with Shaun Maloney putting the Latics ahead from the spot, before Luis Suarez levelled for Liverpool after the break.
Gary Caldwell showed great composure in front of goal for a centre back and here is that all-important strike…
