The 2012 January transfer window has come to an end and it’s a case of good, but could have been better for Newcastle United. Alan Pardew managed to get some business done early and get in a top quality striker in the form of Papiss Cisse and perhaps even more importantly he prevented other clubs from poaching Newcastle’s top players already at St James’ Park. The only disappointment is that the Magpies didn’t manage to bring in a new centre half as a move for Watford’s Adrian Mariappa wasn’t completed.
If you’d have offered me this situation before the window started I definitely would have taken it, mainly because the likes of Demba Ba, Cheik Tiote, Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul are still Newcastle United players. Added to that, they have spent a significant of money on a proven goal scorer and for the first time in a long time Newcastle actually have a strike force that looks good on paper.

The centre of defence is a little bit of a worry for the Toon. Captain Coloccini isn’t a worry at all, and as long as Mike Williamson stays fit then as a pair they should be ok. Of course if one of them gets injured, especially Colo, then it would be disastrous and the back four that played earlier in the season against Norwich could be wheeled out again. I’m not convinced about James Perch as backup and it really is a shame that Steven Taylor is out for the season.
Come the summer for Newcastle United it will once again be a case of holding onto our best players and looking to make additions here and there. If Newcastle can tie Demba Ba down to a new contract, without a release clause, then that would be a real bonus and a centre back like Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa would fit in perfectly. Newcastle have a good squad, it’s just injuries to one or two players will be massive.
