It’s fair to say that Mike Ashley has come in for plenty of criticism since he became Newcastle United owner nearly five years ago in 2007. Many of his actions haven’t pleased Newcastle fans and he has been labelled as the leader of the Cockney Mafia, with the latest action to anger the Toon Army the renaming of St James’ Park to the Sports Direct Arena. Other than that though, in the last six months there seems to have been different Mike Ashley running the club.
The main thing is that he’s now spending significant sums of money, with the transfers of Yohan Cabaye, Davide Santon and most recently Papiss Cisse totalling not far off £20 million. He has backed manager Alan Pardew in the transfer market and can further win over Newcastle fans by keeping hold of Newcastle’s best players this month. However, the biggest difference in the Newcastle owner seems to be the Ashley that’s in the stands.
It appears that Mike Ashley has been shedding the pounds in recent months if the picture below from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle is anything to go by. Hopefully the money he’s saved on food will continue to go on new players for Newcastle! Here’s our spot the difference…
