Newcastle can secure Sturridge, but must make the ultimate sacrifice

It’s no secret that Newcastle are after a top striker this summer, and having read many blogs and comments across the web, it seems that Daniel Sturridge fits the billing for the majority of Newcastle fans. The Chelsea striker impressed while on loan at Bolton at the back of end of last season, and given the money shelled out on Fernando Torres, Sturridge is unlikely to get a look in at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle could prove to be an attractive proposition for the young Englishman, but as part of a deal Chelsea may want to get a player of their own; namely Cheik Tiote.

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien being ruled out until Christmas at least may in turn have a huge affect on Newcastle’s own fortunes. The Blues were keen admirers of Tiote in January, and Alan Pardew and co. did well to tie the Ivorian down on a long term deal (another six and a half years). However, the Ghanaian’s injury is only likely to increase Chelsea’s interest in Tiote, and a firm, substantial bid is likely to be just around the corner.

By securing Tiote to a long-term deal Newcastle have done themselves the world of good in terms of negotiations with the Stamford Bridge club. The Magpies should in no way be forced to part with their star midfielder, whereas in the Jose Enrique situation they may prefer to take the cash now rather than lose him on a free transfer this summer. While Newcastle are in a good position, that doesn’t mean that there’s no chance of Cheik leaving.

As we know, every player has their price (Andy Carroll’s was about £35m). If Chelsea made a firm bid upwards of £15m, Newcastle would be forced to consider a deal; throw Daniel Sturridge into the equation and the value on the table may be too good to turn down. That’s a feeling Mike Ashley got just six months ago, and while losing two of your best players in such a short period of time would be very disappointing, would it be catastrophic?

While I wouldn’t recommend getting rid of Cheik Tiote (he was after all last year’s Premier League signing of the season in my eyes), securing Daniel Sturridge as a result would lessen the blow somewhat. Sturridge is one of the hottest young strikers in England, and I feel he would thrive at St James’ Park. That’s something Tiote’s certainly done, so it would be foolish to sell him after one season I hear you say. Yes it would, but get Sturridge in return and you’d be making the best of a bad situation. Sometimes sacrifices just have to be made.

I’ve just been posting exactly the same comment on another website – if strikers are notoriously hard to get through the door (and they are – of any quality anyway) then let’s do the swap (would we have any change left over from the deal? £5-£8m perhaps?)- get Sturridge in and target a holding midfielder with the money earmarked for a Striker.
Would be a real shame to see Cheik go – but it could be a very positive deal – as long as we can nail down a qaulity holding midfielder – and maybe one who will miss less games thrugh suspension eh?

Can anyone just tell me how the hell this club is being ran?
seriously i’m completely confused with everything. firstly we are being told that a huge chunk of the £35m has been used because its not cheap signing free agents.
if im honest this all sounds like a massive excuse to try and trick fans into thinking we are doing ok in the market. sign some free agents and then have excuses not to spend anymore money.
i also heard that some of the £35m was being used on wages, so where does all the revenue from sky, tickets sales etc go? if this is all going on club expenditure then we have massive problems.

we are seeing clubs like Sunderland Stoke and even Wolves spending more money than us in transfer windows which annoys me.

how are we to push on and get into Europe like Pardew says if no money at all is being spent?

Can i also just add the fact that it looks like our ideal replacement for Enrique is a 1m lb from swansea. superb, sell enrique for in excess of 6m and replace him with a 1m player. and now that it seems taylor isnt coming, ive already seen comments previously from pardew how ferguson would be able to step up. so its likely to be £6m+ for enrique and then nothing spent to replace him.

i wouldnt be suprised if marveux (how ever you spell it and another free agent) was brought in to replace jonas. and ba (another free agent) brought in to replace carroll.

thats tricky 1 like bt a love tiote hes class and we need that hard man in the middle so me personaly say no to it and say we want sturridge for 10mil bt tiote to go nowere !! tiote will be foggoten about when essien is back look at scott parker when he signed for chelsea he was main man for few weeks then wasnt mentioned hope he stays hes a class player all season n we need him for the scumdeland games aswell as barton !!

  • John Green says:

It shows how the times of changed when Sunderland have two strikers who are each worth more than our entire strike force added together.

There is no way in this world that should happen. im all for balancing the books and reducing costs as well as getting rid of dead wood, but there has to come a point where Ashley puts his hand in his pocket and spends some money.

i must say i do agree. it wouldnt be such a bad deal if sturridge was to be part of it. but then again that would mean there would be another player we would have to replace so its a difficult situation

  • ramalama89 says:

orrrrrrrrr how about we just use the cash and give them £15mil straight up for them, chelski have been out and said they aint looking for cover for essien was just another ‘genius’ reporter putting 2+2 together and getting 47 because he is similar to essien and he’s injured, people seem to believe what they hear in the papers as gospel, yet when chelski come out and say they don’t want cover nobody takes it in at all

  • No thanks. We will keep Tiote.

Bid for Sturridge and if it comes off great, if not move on!!

  • pete says:

15m plus sturridge! you are joking, you must mean 15m plus sturridge on loan

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

    no thanks keep tiote

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

peeps make me laugh shouting for sturidge forget him get agbonlahor 10 to 15 million well spent then

    • Martin McGuigan says:

abonglahor – you’ve got to be kidding! Just not good enough, often enough – dear me – you’ll be saying we should go for Bendtner next!

  • MadAboutToon says:

it’s a big NO from me, but did chelsea not say that they wouldn’t be bringing in a replacement because they have enough quality in there team for back up?

  • ZATOONFAN says:

Has anyone checked this guy out.
I have been following the Copa America and have been very impressed with the Costa Rica Forward Joel Nathaniel Campbell Samuels. (Joel Samuels) He is extremely talented and makes Nzogbia seem slow. He reminds me of Tiote with his Skills on the ball
He may be worthwhile looking into.
He is 19 years old and believe he plays… as a Stiker but can play in any of the midfield positions.
He currently plays for Puntarenas in Costa Rica
It seems Arsenal may be looking at him. He could be the buy of the Premier League
    Look no further.

  • Expert says:

We have 35 million. Spend some of it on him without weakening the team. Bloody cheap fat mike is a lier again

  • dev says:

What a joke! We should be in a position to tell Chelsea where to go and still get sturridge for 10m. Why shud we need to part-ex?? If we sell tiote nufc can pi55 right off ill be done wasting my energy, emotion and money on them until Ashley is gone!!

  • toondave says:

Think we should splash the cash and keep Tiote, he was outstanding last season, he knows how to keep the ball so well, 90% of his passes make it to the required destination, Any improvement that our defence witnessed last year was down to that man.

Cany believe all this talk about the 35 million, ashley has got of very lightly in my eyes. We would have had to spend money if the 35 million wasn’t available anyway. Wages shouldn’t come into the equazion, nolan has gone who was a big earner sol campbell has gone so thats 2 wage bills. These french guys that are coming in are on minimal wages

  • Richy Lav says:

We cannot lose tiote under any circumstances. I genuinely believe he will, in time be the best DM in the world. Would love sturridge but not at tiotes expense. Offer chelsea £15m get it done!!!

  • DGB07 says:

Need to keep Tiote, he has pace and strength and will continue to grow as a player. Try for Sturridge up to 15 M but no more.
After seeing DosSantos play for Mexico, take a chance on him for 2m, he’s not playin at Spurs.

  • snipe says:

Sturridge is looking for a BIG club.
And not one that thinks it is.

  • KING ARFA says:
