Sammy Ameobi, the prodigal son, seemed like cult-hero figure akin to his famed brother Shola yesterday when he was brought on for his first appearance in black and white in what seemed like an eternity.

Brought back in from the cold by Rafa Benitez as an injury crisis rocked his ranks, the 24-year-old had been recalled from a loan stint at Bolton Wanderers to help provide cover on the wings. With Rolando Aarons a long-term injury problem on Tyneside and Christian Atsu off at the African Cup of Nations, the Spaniard is not blessed with a wealth of wide options right now.

Having spent time on loan with Cardiff last term, it was the first time the academy graduate stepped foot in the revamped Benton training base, signalling a huge change in the running of the club upon Benitez’s arrival.

Due to a change in the loan system, a player can now only represent two teams in a single season, the former England U21 international is now seemingly set to stay at St. James’ Park, having played for the Trotters this term.

Speaking the Chronicle, the winger has talked up just how much things have changed of late.

“It’s nothing like it was. I was like: ‘What is going on?’

“I wondered what had happened, but it’s great to be back, it really is.”

“There’s a hunger and you can feel it.”
