Newcastle United are lining up a move for Rangers midfielder Josh Windass in January, according to the Scottish Sun

The former Accrington Stanley man is believed to have impressed Rafa Benitez during his short stint at Ibrox, despite struggling with injuries on a relatively frequent basis.

Over the past two transfer windows, the Magpies have departed from the recruitment policy that served them so poorly for a number of years, eventually leading to relegation.

Instead of targeting bargains from the French market, top brass at St. James’ Park have been looking for hungry young British talent, with Windass certainly fitting that mould.

He’s thought to have attracted interest elsewhere in the Championship, with former Toon chief Steve McClaren reportedly eager to bring him to Derby County.

A classy central midfielder of huge potential, a January bid is said to have been weighed up as Benitez moves his promotion push into second gear.
