As the January window fast approaches, it’s rather strange to see Newcastle United head into the New Year sales from a position of power.

Despite their relegation, the Toon are really under no pressure to sell their prized assets and, according to the Chronicle, will quietly go about trying to prepare a squad capable of competing in the Premier League.

While there’s still oh so much to play for during the Championship campaign the Magpies are currently entrenched in, Rafa Benitez will reportedly go about at least beginning to plan for life back in the proverbial Promised Land.

The Spaniard is understood to view signings such as Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie as ones capable of performing in the top tier, as they have done before, and any January incomings will have to fit that idea.

With every passing week, it feels as if Benitez’s reign in charge so far is merely the start of something special on Tyneside, and while fate will not be tempted, planning for life back where we belong will reportedly start sooner rather than later.
