Lascelles growing ever more into captain role

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has urged his side not to get too complacent as they gear up for the visit of Brentford on the weekend.

The Toon’s tenure in the second tier has been topsy-turvy thus far and they currently lie in third position, behind Huddersfield and Norwich City.

Still, they are coming off the back of two wins on the trot, including a famous last minute win over the Canaries in the closing stages of their clash at St. James’ Park.

Such is the nature of the Championship, however, that the Toon Army could just as easily be rolled over by the visiting Bees as they could wipe the floor with them.

For Lascelles, who is quickly growing into his role as captain of the Magpies, the message is clear.

The 22-year-old defender has warned against complacency and has stressed he and his teammates are taking every game as seriously as the other.

“I respect this league massively and I was telling the boys before the Rotherham game we can’t get complacent”, the former Nottingham Forest ace told the Chronicle.

“We had to prepare for Rotherham the same way we do for Norwich and Villa and all the big teams.

“In the Championship it is all about whoever turns up on the day.

“Thankfully, we have been turning up.

“We have to keep it that way and not let things slip.”
