Newcastle centre back Jamaal Lascelles believes he has what it takes to be Newcastle captain if Magpies boss Rafa Benitez gives him the armband for the club’s first league game of the season.

After the departure of former club captain Fabricio Coloccini back to Argentina, the 22 year old has been given the responsibility of captaining the side in preseason by manager Benitez and says he is not fazed if he is given the armband full time. He told the Shields Gazette:

“I’m really proud to wear it. Whoever he decides to pick at the start of the season, it’s totally fine, and I’ll back him up. But I’d love to take on the responsibility. Obviously, it would be a massive weight on my shoulders, but there’s no reason why I can’t deal with it.”

It has been a fast rise for Lascelles who was out of favour under previous manager Steve McClaren but the defender has been shown great faith by Benitez, and he is certain to start at the centre of defence for the opening match against Fulham in 10 dasy. The arrival of Blackburn Rovers captain Grant Hanley for £5.5million will certainly help Lascelles keep it tight at the back in the Championship this season.
