Mehdi Abeid - @reelM_abeidIt’s always nice to keep up with how Newcastle United’s players that are on loan elsewhere are doing and you’ll be pleased to know that Mehdi Abeid, who’s currently on loan with Greek side Panathinaikos, has got his name on the score sheet, even if it was a bit of a scrappy effort!

Newcastle signed Mehdi Abeid from Lens in 2011, penning a five-year contract and seemingly set to have a big career in the north-east.

It hasn’t quite worked out like that so far for the Algerian-born Frenchman, as in two seasons at the club Abeid failed to make a Premier League appearance and featured a handful of times in cup competitions.

A loan to St Johnstone and the Scottish Premiership last season at least saw Abeid get some first team football under his belt and the same is the case at Panathinaikos, where he is currently near the start of a one-year loan spell.

In just his third appearance for the club, Abeid netted his first goal in Greek football, which is actually his first goal in professional football full stop, but I’m not sure he’s going to remember it for very long.

It’s a Greece SuperLeague match between Panathinaikos and Veria; as he takes the ball forward from a long ball up field, the 21-year-old bursts past the right back but overruns it as the goalkeeper comes out to make his clearance.

What happens next? Check out the action below (thanks to @NUFCThreatLevel for posting this on Twitter)

They all count I guess, but he’ll hope the next one is a bit more special.

As we keep an eye on Mehdi Abeid, do you think he’ll ever make it at Newcastle?

What on earth are you talking about man???!!! That was a good goal. He cut straight through the opposition, did very little wrong. As it happens the keeper tried to dispossess him and the ball rebounded in. Abeids very forceful run created and rounded off a good goal hence his celebration and those of his team mates. If the keeper didnt try to take him out like that he would have still have had a golden chance, he didnt do a thing wrong and neither is it a contender for worst goal ever. Your title is totally unacceptable, give the lad a break.

Exactly right. He was a tadge lucky that it went in, but worst goal? – ridiculous – he’ll remember it for the rest of his life – best of luck to him in the future.

  • WHAT!!! says:

Newcastle loanee scores contender for worst goal ever”

you haven’t watched much football then, have you
but who cares, it was celebrated like any other goal by the fans

Of course it’s nowhere near as good as the classic dozen or so that Newcastle have scored in the last 3 weeks.

    “Contender for worst goal ever?”

    Are you serious?
