According to GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle United are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton this summer, but will face competition for his signature.
Newcastle were knocked out of the FA Cup fifth round by Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday in a huge blow for their ambitious campaign to bring a trophy to Tyneside for the first time in seventy years.
An erratic performance from the Magpies saw them go down to ten men in the 83rd minute when Anthony Gordon lashed out at Jan Paul van Hecke, which not only followed Danny Welbeck’s extra time winner for Brighton but means he faces a three-match ban for violent conduct.
The club are expected to appeal the decision for Gordon to serve his full ban, still the talented winger is, at present, set to miss out on the club’s Carabao Cup final challenge against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on March 16th.
Emotions will be high and confidence low on Tyneside today, but a great opportunity to secure European football at the end of the season and the chance to bring home silverware, despite the odds being against them, provides hope for supporters.
Looking ahead to the summer, it is no secret that Newcastle need to reinvest and refresh their squad to keep up with the competition in their ambitions to dominate both domestically and on the European stage.
It has been reported by GIVEMESPORT, that Newcastle are set to compete with Premier League peers Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur to secure the signature of Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton this summer.
The publication claims that it is not only Premier League clubs that have set their sights on the impressive midfielder as Serie A giants Juventus and Bundesliga heavyweight Bayern Munich are also keeping their eye on Wharton’s situation.
It is further noted that the young player – once hailed “outstanding” by Arsenal’s Declan Rice – will not agitate for a move this summer, with Palace clear that he remains an important asset to their plans in the Premier League and would need serious tempting to entertain an offer to part ways with him.
Should Newcastle go all in for Adam Wharton?
Since returning from injury, there is no doubt that Wharton is the linchpin in Palace’s recent form with three victories earned in their last five fixtures and it would be surprising for them to send him packing in the summer.
It would likely take significant investment from any club interested in securing Wharton’s services, and with Newcastle needing to bolster several areas of the pitch, their midfield is unlikely to take priority.
Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have solidified their starting spots in the first eleven, both have been outstanding for the Magpies this season after Eddie Howe found a way to get them in sync with one another.
As a result, it seems like it would be a pointless endeavour to commit millions to a player like Wharton, who would need to compete with Tonali and Guimaraes to get first team football.
The signing of a centre-back to be the natural successor Fabian Schar and a plucky right winger to complete the attacking threat will be essential for the Geordies when the transfer window reopens, getting those two pieces of business done will be crucial for Newcastle’s progression next season.
With that being said, although Wharton would be a great addition to the midfield at St James’ Park, he would not be a priority profile of player to acquire and is therefore unlikely to join the North East giants this summer.
