According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, the rumours that Lewis Hall will miss the Carabao Cup final are true after he was sent for an ankle scan.
Newcastle United have another shot at ending their 70-year trophy drought next weekend when they take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
The Magpies confidently knocked out Arsenal beating them twice over the two-legged semi-final, and supporters will be making the long trip down to London to potentially witness their dreams of silverware come true.
It has been a rollercoaster season for the North East giants with dizzying highs in the domestic cup competition but anxious lows with inconsistent performances in the Premier League.
Last weekend, their fate was sealed in the FA Cup after suffering defeat in the fifth round at St James’ Park against Brighton and Hove Albion, therefore, there is huge anticipation for their Wembley venture next Sunday.
Eddie Howe will be desperate to give the supporters something back for their support over his tenure, especially after already losing in a Carabao Cup final against Manchester United two years ago.
However, the squad has suffered huge blows to their chances of beating league leaders Liverpool in recent days, with Anthony Gordon red-carded in the clash with Brighton and now serving a three-match ban for violent conduct, missing the final.
The bad luck doesn’t end there for Newcastle as it was confirmed last night by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie that left-back Lewis Hall will also miss out on the trip to Wembley after undergoing a scan on his ankle.
Downie took to X to confirm the rumours:
“Lewis Hall will miss the Carabao Cup Final after injuring his ankle last week, as first called by@CraigHope_DM”
“The left-back had a scan and the results have shown enough damage to keep him out of the Final in two weeks.”
“A hammer blow for #NUFC and their left hand side, with Anthony Gordon also missing the final through suspension for his red card against Brighton on Sunday.”
How long is Lewis Hall out for?
There is no doubt that losing Hall is absolutely catastrophic for Newcastle, considering Gordon is also unavailable for selection in the final meaning the first-team has lost the entire left side.
Hall and Gordon have been a lethal combination in Howe’s starting eleven this season, and together have developed a partnership on the left flank that even caught the eye of interim England manager Lee Carsley, starting the pair in the 5-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland back in November 2024.
Unfortunately, Hall is not the only injury concern for the Carabao Cup final as Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier are also doubts, both of whom offer a wealth of experience in the Newcastle back-line.
If Botman could get fit for the clash with Liverpool next weekend, it would make sense for him to start alongside Fabian Schar in the centre-back partnership with Dan Burn moving back into his former left-back role to cover Hall.
Newcastle United have released a statement this morning on X confirming that Lewis Hall will now miss the rest of the season:
“Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot.”
“Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical team.”
“Wishing you all the very best for your surgery and recovery, Lewis”
