According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle United have made the decision not to appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card for violent conduct against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Newcastle United are on a mission to end their 70-year major trophy drought and will take their next opportunity when they head down to Wembley Stadium next week for the Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe will lead his squad to their second domestic cup final in two years, hopeful that they can learn from the mistakes of the past, bringing their experience and quality to cause Liverpool chaos in the capital.

Unfortunately, the North East giants have suffered blows to their trophy hopes due to multiple injury issues with Sven Botman’s chances of playing uncertain, and Lewis Hall confirmed to miss out after undergoing a scan on his ankle.

Not only that, Anthony Gordon was sent off with a straight red card for violent conduct in the FA Cup fifth round defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, which instantly comes with a three-match ban.

It was thought that the club would appeal the decision after the Newcastle boss spoke in his post-match interview about Gordon’s controversial challenge on Jan Paul van Hecke.

“From what I saw on the pitch, I don’t know what Anthony’s intention was, but I’m sure it wasn’t to harm the player or get the red card,” Howe claimed.

“In that moment, I don’t know quite what’s happened, so I have to review it properly before forming my opinion.”

“Knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there. Of course, we’ll reserve the right to put in an appeal. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that, then we will do it without hesitation.”

However, it was reported by Sky Sports News yesterday that Newcastle will not take any further action in an attempt to appeal the three-match suspension for Gordon going forward, so the winger will now definitely miss out on the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

When will Gordon return to action?

There hasn’t been a reason given for Newcastle’s decision not to appeal the red card, something Eddie Howe will likely give clarity on during his pre-match press conference ahead of the West Ham United clash in the Premier League on Monday night.

Gordon has been an outstanding performer for the Magpies this season with nine goals and six assists in all competitions so far, linking up with Alexander Isak to form a formidable forward partnership.

The 24-year-old’s moment of madness has significantly dampened Newcastle’s chances of bringing the silverware back to Tyneside, but supporters will be hopeful that Howe can figure out the right combination to patch up the left side of his starting eleven.

If Botman, by some miracle, can return to action for the final, Dan Burn could return to his role in the left-back position or Livramento could be moved over, with either Harvey Barnes starting in Gordon’s position, or Brazilian star Joelinton may be moved into a makeshift role on the left flank.
